⚌ — yang · yang — tetragrams 1–9 — 22 December to 31 January
The breath is already turning. Nothing above ground knows it yet.
Both fixed lines here are unbroken. Nothing has been qualified, divided, or answered back to. To land anywhere in this province is to be told that the situation is nearer its source than you had assumed — earlier, less committed, still capable of being formed. That is not reassurance. What is unformed is also unguarded.
These nine open the year at the winter solstice and run to the eve of spring. The season is the meaning: the yang breath has begun in the Yellow Palace, underground, in the coldest six weeks of the year, and every figure here describes a strength that cannot yet be seen doing anything. It sprouts in secret. It circles back. It stirs and is mired, is barred by the yin, spreads thin over the deep, goes faint in its trusting. Then it begins to work: feeding things from underneath, drilling into what is hard until the sound comes through, and at last standing strong within and weak without, moving toward greatness in company.
A figure from this province seldom answers the question you asked; it answers the one underneath it. If you came asking whether to act, you are being told that the thing you mean to act on has not finished arriving. If you came asking how it ends, you are being told that it is still being decided somewhere you cannot see into. Read the appraisal as weather, not as counsel — these nine carry no five-phase assignment, and there is no element here to work with. Take no comfort from a day position either; the first figure of all ends on one, and it topples. What this province gives you is an accurate account of where the matter stands before anyone has committed to it. That is worth more than a verdict and feels like less.
